I walk into an empty parking lot, toting a yardstick, duct tape, baby wipes, and a box of chalk pastels. Down on my hands and knees, my canvas is the oily, gum-spotted asphalt, which I clean, tape off, measure, and grid with a piece of white chalk. In just a few days, the gardeners will come with hoses and wash off all of my work, but I don’t think about that. I have a masterpiece to create.

Another time, my canvas might be a blank Word document. Sometimes it’s my silent guitar. Sometimes, admittedly, it’s my mathematics notes - there’s no harm in turning a cosine graph into a pair of foxes, is there? I love creating something out of nothing, bringing beauty to the mundane. Sketching, painting, writing, playing guitar, and listening to music are what give me life.

My name is Emily Downey and I'm eighteen years old, a first-year at UC San Diego majoring in Literature/Writing and hopefully minoring in Visual Art. Thanks for stopping by!
